Tracey Whitney

December 30, 1951 — October 1, 2023

Tracey Green Whitney of Keene, NY died peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 1st, 2023.

Tracey was born on December 30th, 1951 in Princeton, NJ to Edward Green and Polly Pratt Green. She grew up there with her sister Arden Moulton. After graduating from high school she continued her studies at Germain School of Photography in New York City. Growing up, her family enjoyed spending their summers in the Adirondacks. In 1973 she permanently moved to Keene where she always felt most at home. Soon after moving to the area she encountered a young bobsledder, Wade Whitney, who would become her lifelong companion after an invitation to the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Bobsled Run. They were married on April 12, 1975.

Her love of baking and cooking inspired her to open a specialty food store, The Country Gourmet, in Keene Valley with her lifelong best friend, Jane Martin. One community member remarked, "Tracey and Jane cranked out some marvelous baked goods." For ten years they filled the shop with comforting soups, casseroles and crusty loaves of bread. After the store closed, Tracey continued to gift the community with her home baked treats.

Spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends brought her joy. She also loved reading, reciting poetry, corresponding with dear friends and family, gardening, playing in the mountain snow, and cuddling with her cat, Maple. She had a loving, supportive, generous, sincere and resilient nature. Friends described her as compassionate, caring, loyal, bright and loving. She was kind and friendly to people wherever she went. Her wit and sarcastic sense of humor were admired by many as a productive way of coping with her lifelong physical pain.

Tracey's commitment to giving back was evident in her regular contributions to foundations and organizations, benefiting both her local community and beyond. She especially loved working with the Parent Teacher Student Association at Keene Central School and the Keene Fire Department Auxiliary.

Tracey Green Whitney is survived by her husband, Wade Whitney and their children Devon Whitney, Edward (Jennifer) Whitney, and Gretchen (Christopher) Galaty. And her four grandchildren Lauren, Avery, Leo and Tomie. She is also survived by her sister Arden (Anthony) Moulton, their children Anthony Moulton and Tracey (Aaron) Granlund, their children Sebastian and Daphne, and her sister-in-law Alana (Tom) Both.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the Keene Fire Department or High Peaks Hospice.

Arrangements were entrusted to Heidrick Funeral Home (formerly Heald Funeral Home) Elizabethtown, NY.
