Richard (Rick) Alan Atwell, a beloved member of the Westport community, left us peacefully on June 12, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on January 25, 1951, to Ralph Atwell, Jr. and Margaret Merrow, in Elizabethtown, NY.
Rick spent many years working at International Paper before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. He was proud of his hometown and had a great love for the natural beauty of the Adirondacks, often seen riding around for hours to soak in its splendor. Rick's passions included designing his home, refinishing furniture, and taking meticulous care of his lawn, showcasing his commitment to his surroundings.
Throughout his life, Rick was known for his warmth and free spirit, always eager to lend a helping hand and share a laugh. As a true animal lover, he cherished all the pets that graced his life, making them a part of his family.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Rick served with honor, earning multiple medals for his time during the Vietnam war. His military service was a testament to his character and dedication to his country.
He was preceded in death by his partner of 46 years, Evelyn (Tootie) Baker; as well as his parents Ralph Atwell, Jr. and Margaret (Merrow) Atwell.
Rick met the love of his life and longtime partner Evelyn with whom he spent 46 years building a life filled with love and endless laughter. While Rick had no children, he took great pride in his family with Evelyn by his side, cherishing the bonds he formed with his friends and loved ones throughout his journey. His kind and generous spirit touched many, and he will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his companion Vicki Wallingford, whose love and devotion over the past 7 seven years was vital in his well-being and happiness; his stepchildren Dorothy (Randy) Swires, John (Theresa) Baker; his siblings Terry (Jana) Atwell, Bonnie (Bob) Hathaway, and Randy (Dora) Atwell and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will take place on June 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Willsboro Memorial Cemetery, in Willsboro, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rick's honor to High Peaks Hospice, 1247 Dix Ave., Hudson Falls, NY 12839.
