Raymond Stephen Shackett (85), a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, at UVM Medical Center in Burlington, VT. Born on January 5, 1940, in Keene to Stephen Shackett and Greta McGuiness, Ray was a lifelong resident of his cherished hometown of Keene.
Ray was a proud veteran who served in the United States Army and later in the Army Reserves. An esteemed member of the community, he dedicated many years to public service, working as a Corrections Officer for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision until his retirement. He also served as a Grader Operator for the Town of Keene Highway Department for over 25 years, showing his commitment to his community and its well-being.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Thelma (Walter) Delis, Howard (Annette) Shackett, and Mary Ann (Lyman) Boynton.
Ray was a devoted family man, and he is survived by his loving sons, Jeffery (Amy) Shackett and Raymond (Kim) Shackett, Jr.; and his cherished grandchildren, Caroline (Danielle), Stephanie, Raymond, and Ryan Shackett; as well as several nieces and nephews. Just a month prior to his passing, Ray lost his beloved wife, Mary, with whom he danced through life. Together, they were the life of the party, known for their lively jitterbug and square dancing at countless gatherings.
Ray's passions included hunting with his sons and friends and creating unforgettable memories during family trips to Disney and cruising around Alaska and Hawaii. He cherished every moment spent watching his grandchildren's ballgames, and he found immense joy in golfing with his son Raymond and grandson Ryan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Brendan's Church in Keene on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Norton Cemetery. A reception at the AuSable Inn will follow, all are welcome.
