James Woughter

James R. Woughter "Jim" of Keene Valley, NY, formerly of Elmira Heights, NY, Rochester, NY, and Almond, NY, died on Friday, June 13, 2025, in Elizabethtown, NY.

He is survived by his son, Paul (Lisa) Woughter of Andover, NY and granddaughters Jessica and Samantha; his son John Woughter (Pamela Assid) of Colorado Springs, CO and grandsons Ori (Brooke) and Aidan; his son Robert (Kathy) Woughter of Keene, NY and grandsons Zachary (Shannon) and Daniel; and great-grandson Mac; as well as his sister Janice Myers of Salem, VA.

Jim was predeceased by his mother Alice T. MacLaury Woughter in 2007 and his father Earl R. Woughter in 1996; his wife Carol Huntzinger Woughter in 2000; his wife Barbara Olney Woughter in 2005; and his sister Marilyn Woughter Makovitch.

As per Jim's wishes there will be no calling hours and interment will be made in the columbarium at Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell, NY, at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 6 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843.

Jim had a rewarding life having traveled to 49 states, as well as numerous foreign countries. He was employed as an industrial chemist at Westinghouse Horseheads, NY, International Business Machines (IBM) in Endicott, NY. While at IBM he changed career paths from chemistry to computer science. After being a computer programmer/systems analyst for IBM he was employed as a systems analyst for Xerox Corporation in Rochester, NY. Upon answering a newspaper ad for a teaching instructor of computer technology at SUNY Alfred. Jim retired in 1996 as a Full Professor from the State University of New York, College of Technology at Alfred, New York with 31 years of service. He developed the first 2-year Computer Science curriculum in New York State and with the aid of a National Science Foundation Grant in 1979, he developed the first in the world, college level, Computer Graphics Engineering Technology (CAD/CAM) curriculum.

Jim was active in local affairs, being the Charter President of the Almond, NY Lions Club, Cub Scout Leader, Village and Town Justice of the Peace of Almond, NY, Town of Almond, NY Board member and chief financial officer from 1972 to 1976 for FEMA federal flood monies ($3,200,000) for rehabilitation of Almond Village and Town public damage from Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

He served in higher education as a teaching professor interacting with approximately 12,000 students and served as a Computer Graphics Engineering Technology department chair. He was also proud to serve as a Dean at the Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Applied Industrial Studies in Rochester, NY from 1986-1987. During his academic career, his proudest professional accomplishment was twice being awarded the honor of "Excellence in Teaching, School of Engineering Technologies" at SUNY Alfred College of Technology. Even with all of his professional accomplishments, he was most proud of his three sons, Paul, John, and Robert "Bob".
