Herman Gillette

STANDISH
Herman H. Gillette, 75, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at his home. He was born the son of Hazel (Prespare) and Harry Gillette.
Herman attended Lyon Mountain School before entering and serving in the U.S. Army. He then became a truck driver and finished his career as a Heavy Equipment Operator at the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base.
After retiring, Herman enjoyed puttering in his garage and garden. He spent many hours entertaining family and friends at home including his second families, the McKinneys and Alexanders. Herman will always be remembered for his quick witt and funny demeanor he had in life. Some even considered him the “Unofficial” Mayor of Standish.
Besides his 4-legged companion, Buddy, he is survived by his children; Lynne and Robert Merrell of Dayton, Texas: Kim Gillette and Ronald Waldron of Chazy Lake; Melissa Gillette and Donny Drollette of Plattsburgh; Herman Gillette Jr. of Standish; Wendy and Scott King of Chazy Lake; Thomas Gillette of Standish; Erich and Monica Gillette of Standish; Shay Lyn and Doug True of Saranac; one sister Elsie Collins of Baldwinsville; NY; brother Robert of Lakeland, Florida; his grandchildren: Jenifer Robbins, Rebecca and Emily Waldron, Brianna and Christopher McIlroy, Cody and Taylor Gillette, Tessa and Chad King, Thomas Gillette, Jr., Raylan and Colton True and several nieces and nephews. Herman is predeceased by his parents and sisters Loretta Canning, Helen Tavenier and Irene Randall.
Calling hours will be from 4 – 7 pm on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at St. Bernard’s Church in Lyon Mountain. A funeral service will follow at 7 PM. A gathering to honor Herman’s life will continue following the service at the American Legion Post #1623 in Lyon Mountain.
