Gary Hayes

Gary Richard Hayes, aged 72, of Westport, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025. Born November 7, 1952, in Malone, New York, Gary was the beloved son of Richard and Ruby Hayes.

Gary dedicated more than fifty years of his life to the Wadhams-Westport Fire Department, serving his community faithfully as both a firefighter and a member of the fire police. His commitment and bravery will be remembered by all who served alongside him and those whose lives he touched.

In 1973, Gary answered the call of duty and served his country in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he worked at Andre's Truck Stop until 1978, until he sustained an injury that led him to retire from his position there.

From a young age, Gary worked closely with his father and brothers, learning and honing skills in carpentry, electrical work, masonry, and roofing. These experiences shaped his strong work ethic and deep sense of family.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruby Hayes; his sister, Connie Hayes; and his brothers, Barry Hayes and Hal Hayes. He will be greatly missed by his extended family, friends, and all who knew him.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Robert (Sue) Howard of Au Sable Forks, Roger (Ann) Howard of Wadhams, Robin Howard of Corinth, Joe (Michelle) Hayes of Plattsburgh, Cory (Heather) Hayes of Star Lake, and Daiman (Stacey) Hayes of Port Henry.

Services to honor Gary's life will be held at the convenience of the family.
