Andrew William "Bill" Stetz died peacefully in his home on April 6, 2026. Bill was born on January 17, 1932 in Plattsburgh. He is the son of the late Andrew and Ruth (Travis) Stetz. Bill graduated from Plattsburgh High School, Class of 1950. He served in the Army from 1951-1954 in the 11th Airborne Military Police at Fort Campbell, KY and the 187th Airborne Military Police in Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal W/2; the Bronze Service Star; National Defense Service Medal; Paratrooper Badge & Combat Infantry Badge and was honorably discharged in January 1954.
Bill married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Schneider on June 1, 1955, at St. Peter's Church by Father Lemieux. Attendants were James Brown and Verna Roberts. Bill worked at Dannemora State Hospital, retiring in 1978. Bill was a life member of the American Legion, West Plattsburgh, #1619 and a life member of the Veteran's Foreign Wars #125. He was also a member of the Plattsburgh Moose Lodge and past President of the Northern Broomball League. Bill was an avid fisherman; loved camping and bass fishing with his son Stephen (and family) at AuSable Campground for the summers and his visits with Matt (and family) to Alaska for salmon fishing. He also enjoyed hunting, bowling, golf, hockey and in later years became a skilled craftsman at scroll saw cutting.
Bill came from a background of strength, endurance and hard-working generation. Bill (and Shirley) will always be remembered for their tradition (over 30 years) of making candied apples for Halloween.
Bill is survived by his sons, Stephen (Anna) and Matthew (Dawn), and one daughter Christina Stetz; six grandchildren: Jason (Kathy) Stetz, Erica (Jason) Bogett, Nicole & Hope Stetz, and Katelyn & Michael Stetz; two great-granddaughters, Johanna & Ruby; a brother George (Sandy); and several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Janis Hoy.
Bill is predeceased by his wife Shirley of 62 years and his son Michael Stetz; sisters, Helen Dadouses, Jeanette Stokes, Brenda Stetz, and Gloria LaVigne; and a son-in-law, Earl Miner.
At his request, Bill's body will be donated to the University of Vermont College of Medicine for the advancement of Medical Research. There will be no calling hours or memorial service. A celebration of life will be held by the family at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of the North Country at 358 Tom Miller Road or Elmore SPCA/Lil's Feral Cats.
Services were entrusted to Heidrick Funeral Home, 48 Court St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
