This guide offers a gentle sense of what grief can look like and, more importantly, where to find caring support close to home.

Being gentle with yourself

In the early weeks, especially, it helps to lower your expectations of yourself. Rest when you can, even when sleep is hard to find. Try to eat something and drink water, even when you have no appetite. Let people help you, and let yourself say yes when they offer, because most people genuinely want to and simply do not know how to ask. Give yourself permission to set down the tasks that can wait. Grief takes real energy, and treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend is not indulgence. It is care.

When grief needs more support

For many people, grief slowly softens over time, even though it never fully disappears. Sometimes, though, it stays sharp and heavy in a way that makes daily life feel impossible for a long stretch, and that is a sign that extra support could help. There is no shame in reaching for it. Serving Essex County and much of the Adirondack region, it offers bereavement support and grief groups at no cost, and that support is open to community members whether or not your loved one was ever a hospice patient. Holidays and anniversaries

What you are paying for, and what to ask, in New York

For many families, cost is the most stressful part of arranging a funeral, and often the part they understand the least. The truth is that you have far more rights, and far more control, than you may realize. This guide explains where the money actually goes, what the law guarantees you, and the questions worth asking any funeral home, so that you can make clear decisions without pressure.

Your rights around funeral pricing

Funeral pricing in the United States is governed by a federal law called the FTC Funeral Rule, and it exists to protect you. Under that rule, any funeral home must give you an itemized General Price List that is yours to keep, and it must share prices with you over the phone if you ask. You have the right to buy only the goods and services you want, rather than being required to accept a package. Before you are shown caskets, you are entitled to see a written price list, and before you pay, you are entitled to a written, itemized statement of everything you have selected. Embalming is not required by law in most situations, and no funeral home may embalm for a fee without your permission; however, funeral home policies may require embalming for public viewings or public health reasons.

Where the money actually goes

When you look at an itemized price list, the costs generally fall into a handful of categories, and understanding them makes the whole thing far less mysterious.

Basic services fee. This is the one charge added to nearly every arrangement. It covers the professional services of the funeral director and staff, such as planning, coordination, obtaining permits and certificates, and the overhead of being available to you at any hour. It is non-declinable, which means it applies whether you choose burial, cremation, or something simple. Operating a funeral home involves significant overhead, and this fee helps offset those expenses.

Care and transfer of your loved one. This covers bringing your loved one into the funeral home’s care, along with the basic sheltering and handling that follow. Some ask why this fee is higher than they expected. When a funeral home is called to bring someone into their care, it is not as simple as driving to the location of the death and driving back to the funeral home. The expenses the funeral home incurs for this one service alone are quite high, even if the “trip” is “just down the road.”

In New York State, a licensed and registered funeral director or registered resident funeral director must be the one to conduct this service. The amount of education and training involved to obtain licensure is quite significant, which adds to the increased cost. Additionally, the required vehicle (which is often modified for this service) and insurance are additional expenses, and if a funeral assistant is needed, that adds to it as well. One quick note on the funeral assistant: if a funeral home is charging you for a second person to assist with the removal and transportation of your loved one, that is not legal in NYS . The “transportation from place of death” charge includes all staff, regardless of whether it is one funeral director or ten.

Preparation. Embalming falls under this category, and in most cases it is optional rather than required by law. Refrigeration is a common, less costly alternative when there is a short delay. We are proud to be one of only a couple of funeral homes in the area that have invested in refrigeration to ensure your loved one's dignity is held to the highest standards. Dressing, casketing, and cosmetology may also appear here if you choose a viewing.

Facilities and staff for services. If you hold a viewing, funeral, or memorial gathering at the funeral home, the use of the space and staff time are charged here.

Vehicles. A hearse, a service vehicle, or a lead car for a procession appears as a separate item and is used only if you need it.

Merchandise. Caskets, urns, and outer burial containers or vaults make up this category, and the range is wide.

Cash advances. Some charges are paid by the funeral home to outside parties on your behalf, such as the crematory fee, cemetery charges, clergy honoraria, death certificates, obituary notices, and flowers. In New York, a funeral home is not allowed to profit from these items, so what you pay is what the third party charges.

What a funeral or cremation typically costs

The median cost of a funeral with a viewing and burial in the North Country is $12,000, and the median cost of a funeral with a viewing and cremation is about $7,000. Both of those figures generally exclude cemetery costs such as a plot, a vault, and a marker, which are charged separately.

Simpler choices cost considerably less; a direct cremation without a formal viewing or ceremony can come in well below those medians. In the North Country, costs vary widely. Some funeral homes charge a direct cremation fee plus vehicles and mileage; others charge only the direct cremation fee, without transportation costs.

Questions to ask when checking pricing for direct cremations

If you are calling multiple funeral homes, it is very important to ask the following questions regarding direct cremation pricing:

1. What is your direct cremation price?

2. What does that price include?

3. Do you charge transportation such as a vehicle and mileage to the crematory?

4. What is the cost of the crematory you use as a cash advance?

5. Are there any other charges I need to be aware of, such as ferry fees?

6. What is the total amount that will be due for a direct cremation, including all cash advances which are typically charged (crematory fee, death certificates, ferry charge, etc.).

Some funeral homes will only provide their direct cremation price when asked, and will not provide what the total cost will be including cash advances, which leaves families in an uncomfortable position when it comes time to make arrangements, as they were told one charge and not all of the additional cash advance and transportation expenses.

Help that may be available

A few forms of help exist, depending on your situation. Social Security pays a one-time death benefit of $255 to an eligible surviving spouse or dependent child. Veterans and their families may qualify for burial and memorial benefits, as detailed in our veterans guide. For families facing real financial hardship, New York offers limited burial assistance through county social services.

We routinely work with the Clinton County and Essex County Departments of Social Services to seek financial assistance if your loved one qualifies; if they don’t, we work to find a solution.

How Cremation Works in New York

More than half of New York families now choose cremation, and yet it remains the option that funeral homes tend to explain the least. You deserve straight answers, so this guide walks through how cremation actually works in our state, from the first signatures to the remains you receive back, in plain and honest language. Nothing here is graphic. It is simply the truth about a process that too many providers leave vague.

First, what cremation actually is

The most important thing to clear up is that cremation is a method of final care, not a type of service. Choosing cremation does not mean giving up a funeral, a viewing, or a gathering of any kind. You can hold a traditional funeral with your loved one present and choose cremation afterward; you can arrange a memorial service once the cremation is complete; or you can keep everything quiet and private. The cremation itself is only one part of how you say goodbye, and the rest is entirely yours to shape.

How the process works, step by step

Authorization and permits.

Before any cremation can take place in New York, a few documents have to be in order. A licensed funeral director files the death certificate with the local registrar and obtains a cremation permit, and the person with legal authority to make the decision signs a cremation authorization form, witnessed by the funeral director. New York law sets an order for who holds that authority, beginning with someone specifically designated in a written instrument, i.e., a will or an Appointment of Agent form, a spouse or domestic partner, and moving through adult children, parents, and other close family. We handle all of this paperwork on your family’s behalf.

The waiting period.

In practice, the timing is usually shaped by the steps that protect everyone involved, such as registering the death, completing the medical certification, and issuing the permit. In New York, it can take up to 72 hours to obtain a cremation permit.

Transport to a licensed crematory.

Because of the way New York regulates this, your loved one is taken to a separate licensed crematory for the cremation itself, and the next section explains why. Throughout that time, your loved one remains in professional care.

The cremation itself.

For the average adult, the process takes roughly 2 to 3 hours. Only one person is ever cremated at a time. After the chamber has cooled, any metal, such as a surgical implant, is separated out and handled respectfully, and the remaining fragments are processed to a fine and uniform consistency.

The return of the remains.

The cremated remains, usually a few pounds, are placed in a temporary container or in an urn you have chosen, and they are typically returned to your family within a few days. From there, what happens next is entirely up to you.

Why your loved one goes to a separate crematory in New York

This surprises many families, so it is worth explaining plainly. In New York, a funeral home is not permitted to own a crematory or to hold any financial interest in one. Crematories here are operated separately, by not-for-profit cemetery corporations, municipalities, or religious organizations, and they are regulated by the New York State Division of Cemeteries under some of the strictest standards in the country. That is why your loved one is transported to an independent crematory rather than cremated at the funeral home itself.

There are two things families are glad to understand about this arrangement. The first is that it removes any conflict of interest, since the funeral home has no ownership stake in the cremation. The second is that the crematory fee is a genuine pass-through cost, which means a New York funeral home is not allowed to mark it up or profit from it. We work with an independent, family-owned crematory that we know well and trust completely, and your loved one stays under professional, coordinated care from the moment they come into our hands until the cremated remains are returned to you.

How you know the remains you receive are your loved one’s

The quiet worry that almost every family carries, and rarely says aloud, is whether the remains they receive are truly their loved one’s. New York takes this seriously in law. Every crematory is required to keep a written plan that tracks and confirms identification at each step, from the moment your loved one is received until the remains are returned. A metal disc with an identification number and the crematory's name is stamped on it and follows your loved one through the entire process. That number is how we track cremations throughout the entire process. Only one cremation is performed at a time, and the chamber is swept clean between cremations to prevent cremated remains from being mixed.

Common questions, answered plainly

• Do we need a casket? No. New York does not require a casket for cremation, only a suitable combustible container, such as an unfinished wooden box or a sturdy alternative container.

• Can we still have a viewing or a traditional funeral? Yes. Many families choose a full service or a private viewing before the cremation, and we are glad to arrange it.

• Does cremation rule out a cemetery or a marker? Not at all. Cremated remains can be buried in a cemetery plot, placed in a columbarium niche, kept at home, or scattered, and a memorial marker remains very much an option.

• What about a pacemaker or an implant? Devices such as pacemakers must be removed before cremation, because they can be dangerous under heat, and we take care of that step.

What you can do with cremated remains

New York gives families a great deal of freedom here, because there is no state law dictating what you must do with cremated remains. You can bury them, place them in a columbarium, divide them among family members, keep them close, or scatter them in a meaningful place. The one rule worth knowing is that scattering on land or water you do not own requires the permission of whoever does own it, whether that is a cemetery, a park, or a private landowner. Cremation is often, though not always, less expensive than a traditional burial, and the difference depends on the choices you make around services, merchandise, and a final resting place. If you are reading this in the first hours after losing someone, take a moment to breathe, because you do not have to do everything at once. Almost nothing that matters in the days ahead has to be decided right now, and there is no test that you can fail here. This page will walk you through the few steps that truly come first, calmly and in plain language.

If your loved one was receiving hospice care

Call the hospice number first, which is staffed 24 hours a day. A nurse will come to the home, confirm the death, and guide you through everything that happens next. In this situation you do not need to call 911 , and the hospice team will help you decide when you are ready to call the funeral home. There is no hurry in that moment, so sit with your family and say what you need to say.

If death was sudden or unexpected

Call 911 , and the police, EMS, and the county coroner will respond. When a death is sudden or unexpected, New York law asks the coroner to review it before the person can be released to a funeral home. This can feel frightening in the moment, but it is a normal and required step that happens to many families, and no one is being accused of anything. Once the coroner releases your loved one, we can bring them into our care.

If death happened in a hospital or nursing home

The staff will confirm the death and care for your loved one for a short time, and at some point they will ask which funeral home you have chosen. Most local deaths happen at home, at the University of Vermont Health Network’s Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, or in area nursing homes and hospice settings, and the staff at each are used to giving families the time they need.
